However, CCS projects require large investments and take a long time to build. Footnote9 The remaining 18 projects Footnote10 would further increase future provincial carbon capture capacity if completed. This is equivalent to 22% of the 256.5 million tonnes of CO 2 emissions in Alberta in 2020. Of these, seven Footnote7 new projects, with known capacity and commissioning dates plus expansions of already existing projects, have the potential to increase the provincial CCS capacity to about 56 million tonnes of (carbon dioxide) CO 2 per year by 2030 Footnote8 (Table 1). In March Footnote5 and October Footnote6 2022, the Alberta government selected a total of 25 new CCS projects for further evaluation. Upcoming CCS projects in AlbertaĪ new wave of provincial CCS projects are proposed. Two carbon capture projects, Quest and Alberta Carbon Trunk Line or ACTL, Footnote2 Footnote3 were commissioned in 20 respectively, increasing Alberta’s carbon storage capacity Footnote4 to 3.0 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO 2) per year (Mt CO 2/year) by the end of 2022.
